The 4 Pillars of Formation
Following a Synod of Bishops on priestly formation, Pope St. John Paul II published “I Will Give You Shepherds” (PDV). This document emphasized four pillars of priestly formation: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. This wholistic and integrative approach to formation should be seen as a model of formation for all Christians.
-
The whole work of formation is deprived of its foundation if it lacks suitable human formation. (PDV, 43)
-
Spiritual Formation introduces us to a deep communion with Jesus Christ, leads us to the total submission to the Spirit, in a filial attitude toward the Father and a trustful attachment to the Church. (PDV 45)
-
“It is a fundamental demand of the human intelligence by which one ‘participates in the light of God's mind’ and seeks to acquire a wisdom which in turn opens to and is directed toward knowing and adhering to God.” (PDV 51)
-
“Pastoral formation develops by means of mature reflection and practical application, and it is rooted in a spirit, which is the hinge of all and the force which stimulates it and makes it develop.” (PDV 57)
